Line of Dialogue: Let it burn.
This is my thesis project for my MFA Visual Narrative Program, as well as the first chapter of my graphic novel: Metabo
“The Virtual Maze” is the first chapter installment of my graphic novel Metabo.
Wayne Ryder, a talented virtual hunter whose life experiences in the cutthroat Metabo City have led him to be nihilistic and self-serving, is in deep shit with his mobster boss, Dom. He is given one day to pay back double the equivalent of 50 kilos of the fresh produce he stole. As Wayne scrambles to save his own life, he is visited by Maya, a young idealist revolutionary who is on a mission to save her energy-depleted village on the outskirts of Metabo City. She comes to Wayne with a job proposal: steal the mainframe power grid access code of Metabo City. Wayne agrees to the gig, planning to ditch her in the mainframe and save his own skin instead. The two traverse the dangerous Virtual Maze that is Metabo City’s firewall infrastructure, battling Metabo City’s virtual defense, and Zed, a henchman of Dom’s who holds a personal vendetta against Wayne. As the two bond through the trials and tribulations of the Virtual Maze, Wayne needs to decide whether to save himself or honor his agreement and help save Maya’s village.
The boxing world has written Anton “Action” Dixon off, but the old legend refuses to give in. Anton must swallow his pride and adapt in order to defeat the young undefeated champion Malik Arthur.

This is a biography project done for Jim Rugg’s Story Visual Class in the Visual Narrative Graduate Program.
I chose to do it on one of my personal heroes, Anthony Bourdain. Taking quotes from his book Kitchen Confidential and his show A Cook’s Tour, I crafted a 5 page comic showing Bourdain’s transformation from a regular cook to the world traveler we know him as.
The Saw Man is a comic adaptation of a New York Times article written by Randy Kennedy, and later published in his compilation book, Subwayland. I have always been drawn to the characters that exists in the underbelly of the city, the homeless, the street performers, the cooks, the construction workers, etc. The subject of this article, Moses E. Josiah, a subway performer who plays the musical saw, immediately captured my imagination. The idea of a religious man who seeks to spread the gospel in the subway with the use of a handsaw as his choice of musical instrument is such an unique combination, that I felt compelled to illustrate his experience. I want to shed some light on hardworking and talented individuals such as Mr. Josiah who make a living performing for the public. Without them, the subway would be a much more miserable place than it already is, and we should all support people like Moses Josiah who lifts us up with his music.
Visually, I sought to create 4 pages of comic that could both read coherently as a storytelling device and also as 4 beautifully crafted illustrations that one could look at simply for the artwork. While reading the comic, I want the reader to feel as though they are one of the commuters in the Union Square Subway Station. My goal is to create an immersive journey, allowing the readers to experience a day in Moses Josiah’s life, his struggles and the impact he has on the subway riders of New York.
