Despite how unpopular and demonized Putin is in the Western world, he remains extremely popular back in Russia. Using foreign affairs such as the Ukraine conflict, Putin is able to rile up the sense of nationalism in Russia, uniting the people under himself and the Russian flag against foreign odds.
